Former Interim Lafayette Police Chief Wayne Griffin Fired For Lying, Harassment—’Embarrassment’ to City

Former Lafayette Sergeant and Interim Police Chief Wayne Griffin was terminated for sexual harassment and lying during a subsequent investigation.

According to a report from KLFY, Griffin's termination letter was released to them on Wednesday after a judge ordered Lafayette Consolidated Government to turn over records of its investigation into sexual harassment claims made against the former interim police chief.

Griffin was named interim chief of the Lafayette Police Department after former Chief Thomas Glover was ousted in early October 2021—just 10 months after being named to the position.

Two weeks after Griffin was named leader at LPD, a sexual harassment complaint was made against him.

The hand written statement, which detailed sexual harassment claims, was delivered to HR by a male supervisor as told to him by virtue of his position from a lower ranking female police officer.

After receiving the complaint, Griffin was placed on administrative leave as an investigation began. On January 20, Griffin was terminated from his position at the Lafayette Police Department and Lafayette Consolidated Government.

There were multiple public records requests made from various media outlets after Griffin was put on administrative leave but LCG refused to release or provide any documents related to their investigation.

On Tuesday, we learned a judged ordered the documents (both redacted and underacted) to be released and according to the KLFY report, it was confirmed that Griffin was terminated for lying during a disciplinary hearing back in early January.

According to his termination letter, which was released to KLFY Wednesday, Griffin, 44, is accused of giving false information during a pre-disciplinary hearing on January 13, 2022.

Griffin's official termination letter detailed the reasons for his firing as well as a thorough breakdown of each violation as a result of "behavior from Griffin that broke various rules within the Lafayette Consolidated Government’s policies and procedures and the Lafayette Police Department’s general orders."

The letter also confirmed that a cell phone that was obtained by the complainant was examined for data and information "relevant to the investigation." Closing comments of Griffin's termination letter described his actions as an "embarrassment" to the police department and to the city of Lafayette.
