ORIGINAL:
A heartbreaking incident happened on Saturday, March 1, as firefighters were called out to a home to respond to a fire, which turned fatal for one of the people in that home.
Officials say they were called out following a telephone call from a neighbor to emergency services that a home was on fire.
According to Lafayette Fire Department Spokesman and Public Information Officer Alton Trahan, this devastating situation started to unfold around 12:30 Saturday morning when a home in the 100 block of South Orange Street became engulfed in flames.
As firefighters went into the smoke and fire-filled home, they found the fire was raging in the kitchen. Trahan says they found two people in a bedroom, one male and one female. Firefighters were able to get both individuals out of the home, and both of them were taken to a local hospital.
According to Trahan, the 44-year-old male victim did not survive his injuries, and the 52-year-old woman is still listed in critical condition and is hospitalized. He says a dog that was in the home also died from the fire.
