A Winnsboro man has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count each of aggravated arson and remaining after forbidden. This after it was discovered that he set fire to a home where his bedridden mother and infirmed grandfather were still inside.

Police in Winnsboro say 32-year-old Jonathan Armstrong had gotten into an argument with his mother and grandfather. He was told by his mother to leave the premises. When he did not a 911 emergency call was placed.

When first responders arrived on the scene at 300 Carter Street they noticed smoke coming from the structure. The fire was determined to be confined to a single bedroom and was quickly extinguished. Fire investigators determined that the blaze had been intentionally set.

A subsequent interview with Armstrong revealed some discrepancies in his story and the arrest was made. Armstrong was charged and booked into the Franklin Parish Detention Center on Saturday.
