Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigation detectives have charged a 31-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Lafayette Police Officer Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette.

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, a large number of law enforcement officials converged on the scene of the situation on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette when there was a hostage situation.

Louisiana State Police Troop I spokesperson Peggy Bourque says after months of investigation regarding the circumstances surrounding the events that unfolded on that day led detectives to charge Nyjal Hurst with the following charges:

  • Second-Degree Murder
  • Ten Counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder
  • Two Counts of Second-Degree Kidnapping
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm

Various communities in and around Lafayette paid tribute to Jolivette in a variety of ways.

Even a Florida teenager raised awareness about the death of Jolivette.

Bourque says the investigation into what happened that day continues.

Three other officers were injured on the day of Jolivette's shooting death.

One week later, on Thursday, August 1, 2024, Jolivette was laid to rest. On the day of his funeral, hundreds of law enforcement vehicles were in the procession to the funeral ceremony in Opelousas and later to Jolivette's burial in Lafayette.
In January 2025, KLFY reported to the cadets graduating from the Louisiana State Police class that Jolivette would honor him by bringing the officer's backpack to the graduation ceremony. They say he will always be a part of the Louisiana State Police.
