Louisiana State Police officials say a mail delivery driver who was involved in a crash on Sunday, January 5, has died from injuries she incurred in the crash.

According to Trooper First Class Peggy Bourque with the Public Affairs Division, the crash happened as 46-year-old Nakeisa Pitre was driving her United States Postal Service vehicle down Louisiana Highway 3043 with a car behind her.

The vehicle behind Pitre's mail carrier vehicle decided to move into the oncoming lane in order to pass the mail delivery vehicle, and Bourque says at the same time, the mail vehicle slowed down and was attempting to take a left turn into a driveway for a delivery when the two cars collided.

Bourque says that Pitre was unrestrained in the vehicle, and she was ejected from her vehicle. Pitre was taken to the hospital after having sustained significant injuries. Bourque says on Wednesday, January 15, they were notified that Pitre died from her injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was wearing a seat belt and received only minor injuries due to the crash. The crash on Louisiana Highway 3043, east of Webb Lane, is still being investigated.

Louisiana State Police officials remind drivers of the following safety issues while driving:

  • Drivers should always ensure there is no traffic in front or back of them when trying to make a left turn.
  • Drivers should be extremely cautious when passing another vehicle on a roadway.
  • Drivers should never let distraction take their attention away from driving.
  • Drivers should make responsible decisions when they are behind the wheel.
