The St. Landry Parish School Board made the same decision as LPSS on Friday, sending a message to staff that schools would be closed through Wednesday next week.

St. Landry's Announcement

According to an email sent out by the school board on Friday morning, the school system made the decision to shut down after looking at the weather conditions coming next week.

"We are closely monitoring forecasts indicating the potential for severe weather conditions across St. Landry Parish, with the possibility for increased risk of winter precipitation beginning as soon as Tuesday, January 21, 2025," the school board's message read. "As a result, we have decided to close all St. Landry Parish schools and administrative offices Tuesday, January 21, 2025 and Wednesday, January 22, 2025."

The closure includes school-related activities, such as athletic events and other extracurricular plans. However, the school system does expect normal hours to resume on Thursday.

Winter Weather Road Preparedness for South Louisiana

In South Louisiana, we don’t see much snow and ice, but when it does show up, it can be a real hazard on the roads. Here’s how to prepare yourself and your vehicle to stay safe during winter weather:

Stay Updated on Weather Conditions
Louisiana winters can be unpredictable. Check local weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out. Apps like Waze and the Louisiana 511 system are great tools for real-time updates on traffic and closures.

Stock an Emergency Kit
Even if you don’t expect to use it, an emergency kit is a lifesaver. Include:

  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • Warm blankets
  • Non-perishable snacks and bottled water
  • First-aid supplies
  • Jumper cables
  • A phone charger or power bank

Check Your Tires
Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread. Low temperatures can reduce tire pressure, so check it regularly. Consider all-weather or winter tires if you live in areas prone to freezing rain.

Keep Your Gas Tank Full
A full tank prevents your fuel lines from freezing and ensures you’re ready for any unexpected delays on the road.

Slow Down and Increase Following Distance
Bridges and overpasses can ice over even when other roads don’t. Drive slower than usual and leave extra space between you and the car ahead to give yourself more time to react.

Avoid Sudden Movements
When roads are slick, sudden braking, accelerating, or turning can cause you to lose control. Be smooth and steady with your inputs.

De-Ice Your Vehicle Safely
Carry an ice scraper and de-icer spray. Avoid pouring hot water on your windshield—it could crack the glass.

Know When to Stay Home
If road conditions are hazardous, the best option is to avoid driving altogether. If it’s not an emergency, wait until conditions improve before hitting the road.

Plan Alternative Routes
Familiarize yourself with routes that avoid high-risk areas like bridges, overpasses, or shaded roads that are more likely to freeze.

Stay Visible
Use your headlights, even during the day, to make sure other drivers can see you in poor visibility.

Drive Prepared for the Unexpected
Ice and snow aren’t common here, but rain mixed with freezing temperatures can cause black ice. If you do hit a patch, don’t panic—ease off the gas, steer gently, and avoid braking hard.

Have Your Car Serviced
Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter weather. Check your battery, brakes, antifreeze levels, and windshield wipers.

Know Local Resources
Identify local shelters or warming centers in case of a prolonged emergency and keep their contact information handy.
