Opelousas Police say a store clerk is recovering from a gunshot wound and an Opelousas man is in jail facing charges in the incident. OPD says Demarcus Jones was taken into custody on Wednesday after it was alleged he got into an altercation with a store clerk. During that altercation, the clerk was shot in the arm.

The incident happened at a gas station in the 500 block of East Landry Street in Opelousas on Wednesday. The store clerk told police the man repeatedly attempted to enter the store after it was closed. He told the clerk he wanted to use the store's phone.

When the clerk opened the door to tell the man, Demarcus Jones, that the store was closed and he could not come in a fight broke out. It's alleged that during that altercation Jones discharged a weapon striking the clerk in the arm.

Jones was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on multiple charges including Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Simple Battery, Resisting an Officer, and several other drug and firearms-related charges.
