The Abbeville Police Department is investigating an alleged cockfighting ring after receiving a tip into the illegal sport taking place in the city limits.

According to our news partner KATC, the informant told police a group of people appeared to be fighting roosters in the backyard of a home in the 200 block of S. Gertrude Street. Police reported a juvenile, who lives at the residence, was illegally selling alcohol to people in attendance who were allegedly gambling on the fowl fracases.

After identifying several suspects, officers obtained warrants and made nine arrests Wednesday morning.

The following is the list of suspects that were arrested along with their charges and bond amounts.

  • Carleen Grogan, 23, of Abbeville; Letting a Disorderly Place. Bond was set at $2,000.
  • Greg Meaux, 31, of Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000
  • Reid Maihles, 51, of Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000
  • Michael Wiltz, 59, of Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000
  • Roland J. Brailey, 36, of Abbeville; Cockfighting, Contributing to the Delinquency of Juveniles, Operating Alcohol Sales without a Permit. Bond was set at $13,000
  • Lawrence Harris, Jr., 54, of Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000
  • Dasakima Taylor, 33, of Abbeville; Cockfighting, Letting a Disorderly Place. Bond was set at $12,000. Taylor was transported to Vermilion Parish Correctional Center for holding.
  • Skyler Briggs, 29, Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000. Briggs posted bond.
  • Jonathan Thibodeaux, 29, Abbeville; Participating in Cockfighting. Bond was set at $1,000. Thibodeaux posted bond.
