St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot says his 38 years as a highway engineer makes him more than qualified to say that his parish has more deteriorating roads than money in his parish to be able to fix them.

Fontenot says the answer is for taxpayers to give their approval to an item that will be on the October 19 ballot.

The measure call for a two-cent sales tax proposal for voters who live in the unincorporated areas of the parish.

If the tax is approved by voters, the sales tax would generate somewhere near $7 million each year for 15 years.

Fontenot says that amount of money would be enough to repair and overlay every parish road in St. Landry Parish.

He says it would cover any road whether it needs repair, or is just a gravel road that needs a real surface.
