There is a parish-wide burn ban in effect for St. Landry Parish by order of St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot.

Fontenot says due to dry vegetation in the parish, all burning, including in all municipalities, is now not allowed until further notice in St. Landry Parish.

Fontenot says several agencies helped him to make the call including:

  • St. Landry Parish Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness
  • All Municipal and District Fire Chiefs in the parish

The ban is effective as of today.

Fontenot say the ban was necessary as there have been 18 grass fires since the start of August.

The burn ban means there is no burning of anything including debris or trash.

Fontenot says,

"These measures are being done to ensure the safety of the citizens in St. Landry Parish and the first responders who have to battle these fires. With conditions as they are, fires can get out of control quickly and we want everyone to remain safe."
