State police says Simmesport's chief of police, two part-time police officers, former fire chief and two citizens have been arrested on a host of charges ranging from theft to malfeasance.

In a news release, troopers say investigators began a probe after being contacted about possible criminal acts.

The release says the investigation revealed that the suspects "either stole from and/or damaged the inside of a vacant building, as well as the intentional burning of a police car."

Those arrested include Police Chief John Moreau, part-time officers Richard K. Spinner Jr. and Joshua N. Mayeux and Merrick L. Roberts, the town's former fire chief.

Troopers also arrested John Bowman and Dillard J. Bowman III.

It could not be determined if the suspects have attorneys.
