They say "necessity is the mother of invention." Gizmodo.com reports a night of overindulgence in the 1960's led to the "discovery" of the popular pain reliever. Dr. Stewart Adams had a hangover after an evening out with friends, and was due to deliver a speech, so he took 600 mg. of an experimental drug that was being developed as a potential treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The non steroidal compound, known then as 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid, is now known as ibuprofen.
In today's world, such behavior by a researcher would be considered wildly insane. Well, it WAS the '60s...
