Tragic Louisiana Crash Leads to Driver’s Arrest
Officials with Louisiana State Police have arrested a 34-year-old on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, after a crash in which an 82-year-old man was killed.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Marc Gremillion with the Public Affairs Section of State Police says the arrest follows further investigation of a traffic crash that happened Saturday, January 25, on US Highway 51.
According to their preliminary investigation, Gremillion says that night, 34-year-old Broderick C. McKnight was driving northbound on Louisiana Highway 51, and for reasons still being investigated, McKnight's vehicle crossed the center line and hit 82-year-old Wilbert Banks' truck head-on.
Even though Banks was wearing a seatbelt, his injuries were so extensive the man died at the scene of the crash. McKnight was not wearing a seatbelt, and he had to be taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Two passengers in McKnight's vehicle received moderate injuries, and they were also transferred to the hospital.
Routine toxicology samples were taken by both drivers, McKnight and Banks. Gremilion says McKnight was impaired at the time of the crash, and he was then arrested on the following charges:
- Vehicular Homicide, L.R.S. 14:32.1
- Driving Left of Center, L.R.S. 32:71
- Driving on a Suspended Driver's License, L.R.S. 32:415
- No Seatbelt, L.R.S. 32:295.1
This crash continues to be investigated by Louisiana State Police. The crash happened at around 11 o'clock in the morning on January 25 on US Highway 51 near Anderson Road in Tangipahoa Parish.
Louisiana State Police officials say they have several pieces of advice for drivers to stay safe, and they are as follows:
- No one should ever drive while they are impaired by any substance.
- If you are experiencing fatigue, you should not drive.
- Everyone in a vehicle in Louisiana must wear a seatbelt.
- Don't let anything distract you while you are driving.
