A child in St. Martinville was seriously injured on Monday morning after being struck by a car that fled the scene.

The woman driving the car was later arrested.

The incident happened near a school bus stop on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 6:26 am in the area of Main Street and Mimosa Lane in St. Martinville.

According to the St. Martinville Police Department, 64-year-old Donna Bourque of St. Martinville ran through the flashing signs of a school bus and struck the child. She then drove off.

Police were able to identify the vehicle and Bourque via city cameras.

It's reported that Bourque told police she thought she hit a trash can.

She was later arrested and booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail on charges of Hit and Run with Serious Bodily Injury. Her bond has been set at one million dollars.

Police reported that the child is in a local hospital in ICU suffering from a ruptured spleen and broken bones.
