A family of three, and the family's pet, is safe after a fire caused them to leave their home around 4 a.m. this morning.

Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan reported, the residence in the 300 block of Philo Drive sustained moderate fire damage to one room, where the fire originated, and light smoke and water damage elsewhere.

Trahan said 911 dispatchers received a call of a house fire at 3:43 a.m. The call came from the homeowner, Sandra Jordan. She was awakened by the sound of a smoke alarm. She noticed a "red glow" coming from under the door of a spare bedroom that was being used as a hobby room. After waking her husband and daughter, she retrieved the family pet and exited the house safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
