Officials with the State Fire Marshal's Office say they are investigating a fatal fire in which one man was killed. While they did not know the exact cause of the fire, a space heater was found in the home.

According to State Fire Marshal Chief Bryan J Adams, the fire happened at around 5:15 on Monday, January 20, and while they don't have an official report from the coroner's office yet, they do believe the victim is the owner of the home, a 60-year-old man.

As very bitter cold temperatures will be in our forecast for several more days, Adams says it is imperative that residents follow all the safety tips that they suggest in order to prevent fires in their homes.

He recommends the following:

  • Only plug space heaters into a wall socket.
  • Never leave a space heater on at night when you are going to sleep.
  • Space heaters need to be at least 3 to 5 five away from anything flammable.
  • Never use a stove or oven to heat a home.
  • If you're burning a candle, don't leave it unattended.
  • When using your fireplace to heat your home, ensure it is not left unattended.

While investigators are still working to figure out all of the details about how the fire started, they have yet to confirm whether or not the home in Pitkin had a working smoke alarm.

Adams says every home should have at least one working smoke alarm. He says if you don't have a working smoke alarm in your home, you can request help through Louisiana's Operation Save-A-Life. You can find out the information on the program by visiting the website of the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Adams adds that Lowe's and smoke alarm company First Alert recently made a huge donation of smoke alarms to the state of Louisiana.
