OPELOUSAS, La. (KPEL News) - An Opelousas firefighter is being hailed as a hero after going above and beyond during a house fire Tuesday night.

The Opelousas Fire Department was responding to a house fire that had engulfed a family home. That's when the aptly named Blaze Barras noticed one of the family members - a dog named Ace - was unresponsive.

A Heroic Rescue Amid the Flames

According to reports, Ace was found lifeless inside the burning home. Barras grabbed the dog and brought him outside. Despite appearing to have succumbed to the smoke, Barras performed chest compressions and used his personal air supply on the dog.

The Facebook page Historic Opelousas detailed what happened next.

"Tonight, our community witnessed the bravery and compassion of the Opelousas Fire Department, especially one of our new firefighters, Blaze Barras," the social media post read. "During a devastating house fire reported by Chief Chavis, Fireman Barras found a lifeless dog named Ace inside the home. Without hesitation, he brought Ace outside and began performing chest compressions and provided oxygen from his personal air pack."

"We are excited and proud to report that, thanks to Fireman Barras's quick actions, Ace was successfully revived and is now safely back with his grateful owner," the post continued.

The post also included thoughts and prayers for the homeowner, who lost much but was able to hold onto one irreplaceable piece of their family.

More Than Fighting Fires—Saving Lives

Firefighters are known for battling flames, but their heroism extends beyond property and buildings. They are first responders, lifesavers, and community protectors—and that includes looking out for our furry friends, too.

Barras’s fast actions and refusal to quit demonstrate exactly why these men and women are so vital to their communities. Whether it’s pulling someone from a burning home, rescuing flood victims, or reviving a family pet, their dedication never wavers.
